It’s only a bit of rain, it won’t kill you

600 dead

I was watching a food programme on TV the other night when the winter weather of 1947 was mentioned. The exceptionally bad weather that year caused severe food shortages and caused 600 people to die of the cold. Fortunately, I wasn’t alive for what was Ireland’s worst winter weather ever. (Photo shows rare ice-skating in Ireland 100 years ago).

A grand soft day

That in turn set me thinking of how good Irish weather is. Yes, we do get a bit of rain but as they say, rain won’t kill you. But we don’t get anything like the severity of weather, hot or cold, that places in the United States get. A quick bit of Googling showed me that even states like Maine in New England, which is quite a bit more southerly than Meath has seen winter temperatures of minus 45°C. Now that is cold. In Meath we think it’s cold if it dips below minus 4°C.

No extremes

The coldest it’s ever been recorded in Ireland was minus 19°C, back in 1881 and the warmest ever was also in the 1880’s when it hit 33°C. Weather extremes, or the lack of them, are important when looking at locations to expand or establish a business. That’s why Meath is the ideal business location. It’s so rare that there’s enough snow of ice to curtail business. The last time Dublin Airport (just down the road from us) was weather bound was seven years ago, and that closure that was just for a day or two.

Don’t worry about heatwaves

Equally a business can do without the extra expense of keeping staff or assets cool. Data storage units and the like don’t like it when the thermometer climbs to the red zone. We can guarantee potential businesses who might like to #MakeItMeath that there’s no chance of the heat getting to you in Ireland!

Things keep growing in Meath

We’ve just had another very mild winter. The length of the grass around my home suggests that growth didn’t stop over winter. The bushes and trees are back in bud. Ireland’s like that. Never too hot, never too cold, just a little damp. That’s why the island is so green. That little bit of wet is good for keeping the landscape easy on the eye.

A warm welcome
