When 12.5% tax is better than zero

 Finding a perfect home

As part of the continuous we’re doing on the #MakeItMeath campaign I keep an eye out on whatever is happening in business at the macro level in the UK. It’s pretty obvious why it’s important to do this as the fallout from Brexit could be both good or bad depending on the business you’re in. We’re also hoping that if companies choose to exit the UK as their HQ that they’ll see the many attractions of Meath, where they could set up a perfect ‘home’ while still being only two hours frIsle of Man TTom London, or six from New York, should that be a factor.

Isle of Man

Speaking of the UK, had you asked me about the Isle of Man before the whole Brexit issue arose, I would have assumed that the Isle of man was part of the UK. However, I was mildly surprised to learn that the Isle of Man is outside the EU and it’s also outside the UK. So, post Brexit, its experience could be likened to what Britain might expect when it leaves the EU. I view the Isle of Man as a kind of guinea pig as to what post Brexit Britain might look like – though it has the benefit of a zero rate corporation tax. The best UK Prime Minister is promising on that is that she’ll try to cut the business tax rate to 17% over the next couple of years. So why isn’t the world beating the Isle of Man’s door down to get in?

A small rush for a big door

Wherever there is a deal or a bargain to be had it’s said you’ll see a ‘big rush for a small door’. In the case of the Isle of Man one would have expected that there would have been a plethora of corporations setting up there, were the only consideration the corporate tax rate. But of course it’s not. You need the talent, the access and the know-how. That’s why, by a long shot, Meath trumps the rest. We meet all the requirements in spades. Others cannot give the same quality of life, the same easy access to the world, the same pool of Third Level graduates, or the same pro-business environment as we can.
